Sig MPX vs CZ Scorpion

We’re going to look at two of the most popular sub guns on the market and compare the Sig MPX vs CZ Scorpion.

People buy guns for many different reasons. I’ve bought guns because they’re the best tool for the job and because I saw the gun in a movie I enjoyed. For some people, a gun is a tool that carries no emotional attachment.

Sig MPX vs CZ Scorpion 01

With current use in movies, both the Sig MPX and the CZ Scorpion are bound to invoke some of those feelings. Just like a Smith and Wesson Model 29 will if you’re a Dirty Harry fan. John Wick used the Taran Tactical MPX in the third John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, and it’s also been featured in Bad Boys for Life and Equalizer 2.

Sig did a fantastic job with product placement in Equalizer 2 and left me wanting an MXC really bad!

In 6 Underground, Ryan Reynolds’ character used a CZ Scorpion that was all-ceramic, so it didn’t stick to the yacht when they turned it into a magnet. While an all-ceramic gun might not be realistic, it was a fantastic scene, and it made me want a CZ Scorpion SBR.

Roles

Sig MPX vs CZ Scorpion 02

Each of these guns will work better for a specific purpose. It’s important to make sure you’re comparing Sig MPX vs. CZ Scorpion variants with their correct niche in mind.

CZ Scorpion Evo Micro

In theory, the Micro is supposed to be a small concealable PDW that’ll fit in a backpack or sling bag. Reality is somewhat different.

Even though it’s short, the gun is extensive.

The width means that the gun will fill up an entire daily carry backpack. If you’re on a protective detail, that might be fine, but if you’re living your daily life, it’s too big.

When I’m traveling with a gun, I’m also carrying a laptop, chargers, clothing, water, food, toiletries, and other items used daily.

The Scorpion is so wide it doesn’t leave room for those items. I could stuff them all in there, but it’d take 5 minutes to get anything out. Including the CZ Scorpion Micro!

This gun will be best suited for a vehicle, home defense, or just a fun range gun. It looks like a movie gun, and it’s sure to impress all of your friends when you pull it out.

Sig MPX Copperhead

This gun is as close to a true PDW as you’re going to get in a scaled-down submachine gun. It’s not the easiest gun to fit into a backpack, but with a 20 round magazine, it’s the best of the bunch.

With its sliding brace, it’s size efficient and has a much slimmer profile than a folder.

If you’re looking for a PDW that is easy to carry in a pack, then this is the best option on the market. It’s even small enough to conceal it under a large coat if you wanted to go full 80s action movie.

But that size comes at a major cost that’ll we’ll cover later in this article.

CZ Scorpion Evo 3

This is a full-size submachine clone. I personally think this gun shines, setting it up for home defense. Throw a red dot and a light on it, and you’re good to go. It’s a fun gun to shoot that you can also use as a vehicle gun.

Sig MPX 4.5

This is likely the most versatile gun of them all. It’s still wide but thinner than the CZ Scorpion.

You can use a folder or a PDW style brace to fit in a bag but not as well as the MPX Copperhead.

It has a rotating bolt that makes it a quiet suppressor host.

Ergonomics

Ergonomics are essential when choosing the right gun, and the CZ Scorpion and Sig MPX take drastically different approaches.

Braces/Stocks

CZ Scorpion

There are a ton of brace option for the Scorpion. Really too many to mention here, so we’ll cover most of them in accessories.

The most common options are the SB Tactical folding and PDW style braces. You can also buy stocks from CZ if you plan to SBR it. If you’re building a movie clone, SBRing and getting a CZ factory stock are likely the best option.

Sig MPX

With the Copperhead, you get collapsing style PDW brace. It’s very short and doesn’t have a long length of pull. This is designed specifically for the Copperhead to be as small as possible. If you wish to remove it, there is a section of 1913 rail that use you can use to attach a folding brace or stock.

The MPX 4.5 has the same M1913 rail but won’t accept the same sliding brace as the Copperhead. You can get an SB Tactical PDW brace but it’ll at a lot more length to the gun when stowed.

Sig has stock versions of the brace options if you decide to SBR the gun.

Pistol Grips

CZ Scorpion

The gun grip has an extreme angle and is similar to the old A2 style AR15 Grip. That grip was designed for shooting from the prone.

Considering the CZ Scorpion is a submachine gun designed for close-in shooting with a 90-degree grip makes more sense.

Sig MPX

So the current grip angle makes no sense. There are aftermarket options but not that many. We’ll cover those later.

Sig MPX

Sig again takes a design feature from the AR 15 and takes standard AR15 Grips. This means you can install any AR15 grip you want. The factory grip is a copy of a Magpul MOE grip, which works well and is designed for more CQB style shooting.

Controls Sig MPX vs CZ Scorpion

Safety

There are major differences in the safety of the CZ Scorpion vs MPX.

CZ Scorpion Safety

The safety of the scorpion is something I personally don’t care for. It’s ambidextrous but isn’t as ergonomic as an AR15 style safety.

The ambidextrous feature is actually a downside as the opposite side safety level will dig into your hand when shooting. A lot of people replace the level with a safety delete kit.

Sig MPX Safety

On the MPX, you’ll find a well-designed ambidextrous AR15 style safety. The right arm is shorter, so it doesn’t bother your grip when shooting the gun. Sig did an excellent job, but you could always switch it out for a AR 15 safety.

Trigger

There is a big difference between mechanical accuracy and practical accuracy. The trigger plays a big role when comparing the practical accuracy of the Sig MPX vs. CZ Scorpion.

Mechanical accuracy is how well the gun shoots when secure in a vice. Practical accuracy is the accuracy the shooter can achieve with the gun. So practical accuracy is the only type that really matters.

CZ Scorpion Trigger

This trigger sucks! It’s heavy and creepy and just not fun to shoot. This might be the single worst feature of the gun. There are aftermarket kits to improve the trigger, but even those, the trigger isn’t as good on the CZ Scorpion vs. MPX.

Sig MPX Trigger

The trigger on the Sig MPX is basically a really good Mil-Spec AR15 trigger.

Bolt Release

CZ Scorpion

I think CZ did a good job if you’re a right-handed shooter. It’s easy to reach with your thumb after inserting a fresh magazine.

Sig MPX

Again the MPX copies the AR15 and then improves on it. Sig put a standard ping pong paddle bolt release and a right side release under the ejection port. You can access the right side release using your trigger finger, making it a slightly faster reload. I don’t use that because I’m so used to a standard AR15, but it’s nice to have the option.

Magazine Release CZ Scorpion vs MPX

It will be hard to argue against the paddle release on CZ Scorpion vs MPX that uses a button style release from a reliability standpoint. The AK is famous for being bomb-proof with its paddle-style release, but it’s going to be slower than a button release. Both magazine releases are ambidextrous.

Most people can reach the MPX release with their trigger finger, while the Scorpion will require you to use your support hand to trip the magazine out. Some people might have long enough fingers to hit the paddle with their trigger finger, but most won’t.

At the end of the day, it’s going to be faster to reload the Sig MPX vs CZ Scorpion.

Magazine Well

Both of these guns have a pretty well-beveled magazine well. I don’t see an advantage to one gun over the other.

Sig MPX vs CZ Scorpion Quality

No contest! The CZ is mostly polymer, while the Sig MPX is all metal minus the pistol grip. It’s not like the CZ isn’t well made.

A well made all-metal gun is always going to appear higher quality than a mostly polymer one. The higher quality firearm is the Sig MPX vs CZ Scorpion.

If you’re anything like me, you want to be able to customize your gun to fit you. Having the right aftermarket accessories is key to making that happen. We live in an incredible age where powerful, user-friendly Computer-Aided Design(CAD) can be licensed for a couple of hundred dollars a year.

User-friendly software combined with affordable 3D printed and machining options has revolutionized the aftermarket. You no longer have to have massive quantities to justify production for the parts. So we’re seeing companies pop up that are making really cool parts that previously weren’t financially viable.

CZ Scorpion Accessories

Apex Tactical

Famous for the trigger kits, they don’t make one for the CZ Scorpion. But they do make a variety of safeties and a pistol grip.

CZ Custom

One of the best places to shop for all CZ guns, they offer their own brace adapters, safeties, triggers, trigger parts, as well as OEM and aftermarket parts from other manufacturers.

Dan Haga Designs

A really cool company with lots of parts for lower production guns. They have a stock adapter for the Scorpion.

Franklin Armory

You can get a Binary trigger from them if you want twice the firepower.

Gearhead Works

They make awesome braces, including a CZ Scorpion adaptor that mimics the look of the factory stock. You can also get a drop-in trigger pack and extended magazine release from them.

HB Industries

One of the first aftermarket supporters of the CZ Scorpion. They make handguards, safeties, brace/stock adapters, muzzle devices, charging handles, trigger shoes, grips, magazine releases, and barrels. They’re pretty much a one shop stop.

Magpul Industries

They offer a variety of accessories for the CZ Scorpion. They make 35 round magazines, a 50 round drum, pistol grip, safety delete, and an extended magazine release.

Mcarbo

MCarbo offers a spring kit to improve the trigger pull.

Midwest Industries

This is another aftermarket handguard option, but it’ll take away the Scorpion’s movie gun looks.

SB Tactical

SB makes two different brace for the Scorpion as well at braces that’ll work with adaptors.

Sig MPX Accessories

Custom Smith

Another cool brand. They make a variety of braces adapters for the MPX series.

Geissele

Known for their AR triggers, Geissele also makes a trigger for the MPX and a charging handle.

Lancer Systems

They are Sig’s OEM for their MPX magazines, and they also offer Cabon Fiber handguards.

Midwest Industries

If you’re looking for a metal handguard that isn’t a Sig, this will be a good choice.

SB Tactical

They make a variety of braces that’ll fit the gun.

Timney

Another option for an aftermarket trigger.

MPX vs Scorpion Accessories Mounting

Mounting accessories to the Sig MPX and the CZ Scorpion Evo will depend on the variant you have. Each of these guns has a specific purpose, and that’ll affect how you can mount accessories. Most people are going to want to mount a flashlight, optic, and maybe a sling.

The optic is pretty much the same for all the guns, but the light will be a challenge on some. For those who want to mount an IR laser, all of these guns will be a little bit short, but it is doable on the larger variants.

CZ Scorpion Evo Micro

Despite its short format, it’s not that hard to mount a light to this gun. You can mount it to the top rail with an offset mount like the moonlight mod button. I’ve found this works the best.

There are M Lok slots, but it’s going to be awkward to mount a light and be able to activate it. There are no great options to mount a sling on the front of the gun. The best option is an offset QD mount mounted on the top rail.

So you can mount a 1 or 2 point sling.

If you’re planning to suppress the gun, you’ll want to keep in mind that the blowback action will be louder than the rotating bolt MPX.

Sig MPX Copperhead

You’re likely not going to want to mount a light to this gun. The handguard is so short there isn’t a lot of room to place your hand. There are no M Lok slots on the side, so you have to mount it using the top rail.

You could use an offset mount or mount something like a Streamlight TLR1 or Surefire X300. None of these are going to be great options. You can mount a 1 point sling at the rear.

An oddity of this design is the mushroomed muzzle device that’s machined into the barrel. This means you want to be able to mount a suppressor on the Sig MPX Copperhead.

CZ Scorpion Evo 3

The top rail on this gun is cut somewhat short. So mounting a light off the top rail isn’t ideal. It’s easy to mount a light to the sides, and you could run a pressure switch on the top rail.

Sig MPX 4.5

This gun is pretty much identically setup to the Micro. That is unless you get an extended handguard. If you plan to run the gun suppressed, there is no reason not to get a longer handguard. A longer handguard allows you to get light out further forward. This makes the use of a weapon light much more ergonomic. With the 8 inch handguard, this is by far the most ergonomic gun. You could even mount an IR Laser if you wanted to.

With its piston system and rotating bolt, this is by far the quietest gun to suppress. So if you’re looking for a suppressor host, I wouldn’t look any further.

MPX vs Scorpion Aesthetics

These guns have two very different looks. Overall I find the Scorpion design to be more attractive. The Sig MPX Copperhead lacks the proportionality that its Scorpion Micro counterpart has.

When it’s accessorized, I think the Sig MPX 4.5 is probably the best-looking gun of the bunch. That said, it’s not leaps and bounds better than the scorpion.

If you’re looking for a more traditional looking gun, go with the Sig MPX vs CZ Scorpion, which looks more futuristic. At the end of the day, it’s a personal preference and what role you want to gun to fill your collection.

Sig MPX vs CZ Scorpion Maintenance

This section is going to be short. I haven’t had any reliability issues with my MPX except when it’s run dry. The Sig MPX doesn’t like to be run even slightly dry. You can usually run an AR15 fairly dry, but that’s not an option with the MPX. As long as you keep it wet, you should be good.

The CZ Scorpion is a simple blowback design that’ll work with little to no maintenance. A well-maintained gun is always better, but if you’re looking for something that is bombproof reliable no matter how you treat it, then go with a Scorpion.

CZ Scorpion vs MPX Shooting

Due to the difference in their operating systems, these guns have completely different recoil impulses. Hands down, the Sig MPX is a smoother shooting gun. The piston and rotating bolt are excellent at making recoil nonexistent. If you’re shooting the copperhead, there is much recoil, but there is a ton of concussion.

With the short LOP and 3.5-inch barrel, the muzzle of the copperhead sits really close to your face, meaning you feel that concussion.

It’s not fun to shoot more than a 20 round mag in a range session. If you shoot more than a magazine, don’t be surprised when you leave the range with a massive headache.

There is a hefty bolt on the CZ Scorpion, which means there is a lot of felt recoil. Much more recoil than you’d feel on a 5.56 AR15. If you’re using the gun for self-defense, the CZ scorpion will be less effective and harder to shoot than an MPX. But if you’re shooting for fun, both guns are a blast.

There isn’t a difference between the Scorpion Evo and Micro when it comes to shooting this. There is on the MPX 4.5 and the Copperhead. I don’t think there is a clear winner for Sig MPX vs CZ Scorpion. Both have their upsides; It just depends on what features you’re looking for.

Sig MPX vs CZ Scorpion Price/Value

Sig MPX vs CZ Scorpion 02

In my opinion, both of these guns have a similar value for the cost. You’re going to pay a lot more for the Sig MPX, but you’re going to get an all-metal gun with more refined features. On the other hand, you have the scorpion that does everything the Sig does but not quite as well. It does cost significantly less, though.

If you’re buying this gun for the range only then, I can’t see which will be the most fun. It’s fun to shoot guns like the Scorpion with a more violent recoil impulse.

At the same time, it’s also fun to shoot guns like the MPX with almost to recoil.

For home defense or a truck gun, I’d choose MPX all day as it’s just more effective. You can shoot a Sig MPX much better and easier than the Scorpion due to the recoil impulse and the trigger. So if you have the budget and that’s your purpose, I’d suggest going with that.

Now, if you’re comparing the Sig MPX Copperhead vs CZ Scorpion Micro, the cost is only $430 apart. That is a lot of money, but if you’re looking for the smallest gun possible to carry in a bag, it’s worth it.

The CZ Scorpion Micro is a very thick gun, and it’s even thicker when folded. Unless you’re using a 40 Liter plus hiking pack, it’ll fill the entire pack. It’ll effectively use twice as much space as the Copperhead.

For this reason, I’m going to say there is more value in the copperhead unless you plan to suppress the gun.

This is an opinion piece, but I always aim to eliminate bias. Look, we’ve all read them before. Gun reviews that claim to be helpful, but they’re really thinly veiled hit pieces trying to get you to buy something before you’ve even started your research. Or, even worse, a review put together by a content writer who has never even held a gun.

I’ve trained with some of the best in the business to learn various shooting styles and ideologies to better serve our customers. I’ve purchased guns of all price points, calibers, and action types to build the best products for the market. I want you to walk away knowing you have the information you need to make a sound purchasing decision.

  1. Thank you for such an in depth review! It is exactly what I needed as I am indeed looking to choose between these very platforms and you did the research for me

  2. Safety digs into your hand? Trigger sucks? Add the Franklin Arms binary and it shits all over any SIG MPX. You sound like a democrat. SIG is known for using the general consumer as their Guinea pigs. I haven’t seen a SIG yet to didn’t have issues. The first and last SIG will have her own is the MPX pellet gun made by SIG, less than 50 rounds any needed repairs. JUNK.

    • I can’t speak to their pellet guns as I’ve never owned one. Sig’s products usually do have substantial issues out of the gate(I have videos of those issues I personally experienced with the P365(both reliability and a broken striker in 1000 rounds) and P365XL on my YouTube Channel). They also tend to get the right eventually. I’ve had no issues with my MPX but I wouldn’t own a Gen 1 for anything. But my Gen 2 has been a great gun and it just shoots a lot softer and quieter suppressed than the scorpion.

    • In addition to 8″ Gen 2 MPX also own Sigs: two 556, 522, P220. Never had issues with ANY of them. SIG is much higher quality so you will pay more if you can appreciate those benefits.

If you are happy with your simple blowback, cheap, plastic, heavy-recoiling Scorpion that’s Fine.
Just don’t dump on SIG to justify your choices.

  3. When the solar flare hits earth, all electrical grids are wiped out, store shelves are empty and police and military are nowhere to be found, the expensive gun you outfitted will have been dropped somewhere in a field when the ammo you can carry ran out and you will be carrying whatever you can find that has a few rounds of ammo in it. I’d be happy to find either of these or even a Keltec or Highpoint with some ammo in them to carry for a couple days. That’s the mindset to have.

  4. I have multiple sigs. I do not personally own a scorpion but have sent a lot of rounds down range with one that belongs to a friend. We are both regular guys that work regular jobs and have regular bills. There are always going to be folks knocking whatever choice you make on firearm. My buddy bought the cz (which is a fine gun and I like) and began buying upgrades. Trigger, stock, mag release, more ergonomic grip, some small internals, then another stock, and grip. I bought a gen 3 mpx. Long story short, he has mor invested in his than I do and the recoil can never be matched. The accuracy on mine is far superior…not that you’re going to make a fuss over a 4.5 inch barrel, but still. If you like the evo out of the box buy the cz. If you want to make it into a sig, buy a sig and save the upgrade money for ammo. Either way…enjoy and be proud we enjoy the freedoms to enjoy what we do.
